Omo Kulu Mele
Mission:
Supporting the importance of reflecting on the past, in order to build a successful future.
Omo means children in the Yoruba language. The children have always been our future, and we are passing the torch. Wellness through traditional African dance and drum develop students’ personal identities, self-esteem, feelings of belonging and inclusion, and sense of cultural and community pride. It also supports cross-cultural investigations that contribute to their understanding and appreciation of their classmates and neighbors, individually and collectively; social bonds - sisterhood and brotherhood. Our program presents education about African culture that correlates with respect, dignity, and cultural diversity.
“You never stop learning,” is Kulu Mele mantra. Omo Kulu Mele classes for young people introduce basic drum rhythms and dance movements, students (3-18) learn together over a year, culminating in a spring recital. Older children sometimes have the opportunity to perform with the company. Help support Kulu Mele’s mission to preserve and perpetuate West African and Diasporic arts and culture.
